Microsoft's Surface phone is real! It's called Surface Duo and runs Android

Microsoft had one more thing to announce at the end of its Surface event: a foldable Surface phone that runs Android.

Called Surface Duo, it looks a lot like Microsoft’s just-announced dual-screen Surface Neo laptop, only it's more portable. It features two screens and can rotate 360-degrees so that it works as a small tablet.

The device features two 5.6 inch displays with a 360 degree hinge similar to the Microsoft Surface Neo laptop but small enough to fit in your pocket. This means the device can fold together to protect the screens, open up to use both screens simultaneously, or have the device closed with one screen facing outward similar to a regular smartphone.

While this is a pocketable device runs on a version of Android, make calls, take photos, and well, do everything you expect of a smartphone, Microsoft was pretty clear they think of it as something more than a smartphone. However Microsoft wants to describe it though, people are going to think of the Surface Duo as a smartphone, which makes it the first mobile device produced by Microsoft since the last Windows Phone in 2017.

What’s more impressive about the new device is that it appears to take the best parts of foldable devices like the Samsung Galaxy Fold, while just abandoning the foldable glass center that has given the Galaxy Fold and similar devices so many problems. Each display is capable of displaying a different application or they can function as one slightly larger screen together.

The Microsoft Surface Duo won’t be available for awhile though, as the device is set to launch in holiday season 2020.

This story is developing.
