OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro: Release date, specs, rumours, news and features

OnePlus typically announces a couple of smartphones a year. This year was the first time it announced two options of the first smartphone - the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro - but the "T" version of those devices is still expected before the year is out.

This is everything we have heard so far about the OnePlus 7T Pro, as well as the standard OnePlus 7T.

Release date

  • 26 September 2019
  • 10 October 2019

OnePlus traditionally announces the "T" version of its smartphone sometime in November, while the first device is usually announced around May or June. That won't be the case for this year though.

The company has officially revealed that it will be holding an event on 26 September in India, where we expect to see the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus TV - but that's reportedly the first event of the 7T series. There's then an event on 10 October in London. Exactly what will be revealed where currently isn't clear.

Price

  • Around $670/£650

The OnePlus 7 Pro starts at $669 or £649. We expect the OnePlus 7T Pro to stay around the same price point, while the OnePlus 7T should be a little cheaper, like the OnePlus 7 was compared to the OnePlus 7T Pro.

Design

  • 7T Pro expected to be same as OnePlus 7 Pro
  • Full screen, pop up camera
  • Full OnePlus 7T design revealed

OnePlus usually doesn't mess with the design too much for the "T" version of its smartphone. For the OnePlus 6T, it introduced a waterdrop notch over the larger notch on the OnePlus 6, but typically, it's the internal hardware that gets an upgrade.

Many of the leaks surrounding the OnePlus 7T Pro show the purported device in a case so it's difficult to glean much information from them. Based on what we can see, it looks like the OnePlus 7T Pro will offer a very similar design to the OnePlus 7 Pro with a full, uninterrupted display and a triple camera on the rear.

There have been a number of leaks showing a round camera on the back of a OnePlus device and this has been confirmed by OnePlus to be the new OnePlus 7T. It will have a matte glass finish, with a smooth touch and metallic radiance, according to OnePlus.

Display

  • OnePlus 7T Pro expected to increase resolution
  • 90Hz refresh rate for standard model
  • In-display fingerprint sensor

The OnePlus 7 Pro comes with a 6.67-inch Quad HD+ display, though the OnePlus 7T Pro is said to adopt a similar size but higher resolution. There's a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, an AMOLED panel, 3D Corning Gorilla Glass and a 90Hz refresh rate, all of which we expect on the OnePlus 7T Pro.

An under-display fingerprint sensor is also expected to appear on the 7T Pro, like the 7 Pro.

In terms of the OnePlus 7T, rumours suggest it will have a 6.55-inch display - which is an increase on the 7 that has a 6.41-inch screen. The resolution is also said to jump to Quad HD over Full HD and based on the event invite, it will also adopt the 90Hz refresh rate of the 7 Pro.

Hardware

  • Updated hardware likely
  • 5G enabled for Pro
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus

Hardware is where the OnePlus 7T Pro is likely to differ from its predecessor. The OnePlus 7 offers the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset under its hood, which leads us to believe the 7T and 7T Pro will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus platform. It's also been claimed the Pro model might offer 5G capabilities like the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, especially after Pete Lau, OnePlus CEO said the company would release a new 5G handset in Q4 of 2019.

RAM options on the current Pro device are 6GB, 8GB and 12GB, while storage options are 128GB and 256GB for the OnePlus 7 Pro. Rumours suggest the 7T Pro will have 8GB RAM and come in a 256GB storage option.

A 4000mAh battery is on board the OnePlus 7 Pro with Warp Charge 30 Fast Charging. Rumours suggest we will see a 4085mAh battery on the OnePlus 7T Pro, which is pretty much the same.

In terms of the OnePlus 7T, 6GB and 8GB of RAM have been suggested, along with 128GB and 256GB of storage. It's battery is said to increase to 3800mAh, which is a small jump from the OnePlus 7.

Cameras

  • Same setup as OnePlus 7 Pro
  • Possible software improvements

The OnePlus 7 Pro has a triple rear camera comprised of a 48-megapixel main camera, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide camera and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera. There's also a 16-megapixel pop up front camera.

We're expecting the same setup for the OnePlus 7T Pro but it wouldn't be too surprising to see some improvements, even if just software, allowing for the potential of better results in the "T" model.

The OnePlus 7T will have a triple rear camera, which would be a step up from the dual camera offered on the OnePlus 7. Rumours suggest the 48-megapixel main sensor will be coupled with a 16-megapixel and 12-megapixel sensor. While we've had no official confirmation of the details, the official images shared of the OnePlus 7T show three cameras on the rear.

It is not yet clear there will be any other differentiating factors for the McLaren model, as there was with the OnePlus 6T model and 30W Warp Charge.

29 August 2019: OnePlus 7T specs revealed in latest leak, triple camera and display boost expected

Ishan Agarwal has revealed some specifications for the standard OnePlus 7T in a tweet. The tweet claims the device will run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset, coupled with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of 256GB of storage.

The display will apparently increase to 6.55-inches with a 90Hz refresh rate and Quad HD resolution and the battery will increase to 3800mAh. It's also claimed there will be a triple camera on the rear with a 48-megapixel main camera, along with 16-megapixel and 12-megapixel sensors and there will be some improvements to the features including 960fps video.

22 August 2019: These leaked sketches show a mystery OnePlus phone, maybe a 5G 7T Pro?

Evan Blass shared some sketches on Twitter showing a OnePlus device with a circular camera housing on the rear. The sketches appear to resemble a presentation slide leak from December 2018 but it's not clear what OnePlus device they refer to.

Some are suggesting they could be the 5G model of the OnePlus 7T Pro but at the moment, it's unclear.

20 August 2019: OnePlus 7T Pro rumoured to launch 10 October, on sale 15 October

Leaker Max.J (@Samsung_News_) tweeted an image of what was supposedly the OnePlus 7T Pro with the date 15 October, leading many to assume this was the event date for the device. TechRadar then revealed it had been told this wouldn't be the date.

Max.J then followed up his initial tweet with some more information. The 15 October date is still detailed but as the on sale date, rather than the event date. The leaker claims the OnePlus 7T Pro launch in India on 26 September, followed by the US and EU on 10 October.

14 August 2019: OnePlus CEO confirms a second 5G phone is coming soon

OnePlus' CEO, Pete Lau, has said the company's already planning a second 5G handset.

He told the Financial Times that, with the upcoming 5G era approaching, OnePlus is going to invest more. OnePlus has doubled its headcount to more than 1,700 employees, he explained, focused more on research and development, and it will release a new 5G handset globally in the fourth quarter of 2019. "If you want to be a premium phone in 2020, you have to be equipped with 5G technology," he said.

13 August 2019: OnePlus 7T won't launch on October 15 after all

Following the rumour that the OnePlus 7T Pro would launch on October 15, TechRadar reported a source close to the matter told the site the the company won't be launching its next phone on October 15. The source was unable to confirm when - or even if - the phone would be released however.

11 August 2019: OnePlus 7T reported to launch 15 October

Leaker Max_J (@Samsung_News_) tweeted an image claiming a OnePlus device would be announced on 15 October. The image of the device wasn't overly clear, though many assumed it was the OnePlus 7T Pro.

9 August 2019: OnePlus 7T Pro photos show up again, this time not just the front

Further images have emerged showing more details of the upcoming OnePlus 7T Pro. It's still stuck in its protective camouflaging case, but very little - if anything - appears to have changed in terms of design and build compared to the OnePlus 7 Pro. It would seem even the Nebula Blue colour is sticking around for another generation.

On the back, the triple camera system and LED flash also appears to be identical to the current OnePlus 7 Pro. It's possible the sensors and lenses are improved, but that's not something a picture can show easily.

6 August 2019: Is OnePlus making a second 5G phone, possibly the OnePlus 7T Pro?

US network Sprint has confirmed a 5G smartphone from OnePlus will become the fourth 5G device it carries, alongside the LG V50, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, and HTC 5G Hub.

The network didn't reveal which 5G device it would be getting from OnePlus, meaning it could be the current OnePlus 7 Pro 5G, but with the 7T Pro expected to arrive soon, speculation has suggested it might be this model instead.

5 August 2019: OnePlus 7T Pro real images allegedly leak online

Images appeared on SlashLeaks and Weibo showing a couple of real-life images of what's said to be the OnePlus 7T Pro.

Both were in a protective casing, covering most of the design except the screen. One image shows an Android Beta Program screen, while the other shows a pixellated home screen to obscure some of the details but neither give away much.
