Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro release date, specs, features and rumours

Huawei's P30 Pro is one of the best camera phones on the market, if not the best, but it's not the last device we are expecting to see from the Chinese company this year.

The Mate 30 series is due to arrive on 19 September and rumours suggest three variants will be present - which might run on Huawei's new HarmonyOS or an open source of Android with EMUI 10 without Google apps and services due to the ongoing trade war with the US.

Here is everything we know and have heard so far about the Mate 30, Mate 30 Pro and Mate 30 Lite.

Release date

  • 19 September 2019

Typically, the Huawei Mate series is released in October. That won't be the case for the Mate 30 though. The company has confirmed the event date for the Mate 30 series will be 19 September 2019.

While the devices will be announced on 19 September though, it is not yet clear if they will come to Europe. There has been talk that they won't, at least not yet, but we will know more when the launch event has happened.

Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro design

  • Premium designs
  • IP68 for Mate 30 Pro
  • Circular camera housings

The Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro are expected to follow in the design paths of their predecessors. We're expecting the Leica-branded camera system again, to make its way onto the new devices, but in a circular housing. We're also expecting a notch on the front and premium, metal and glass build qualities.

Exciting colour options are also expected and at least the Mate 30 Pro should offer IP68 water and dust resistance.

The Mate 30 Lite is expected to have a punch-hole front camera with a square camera housing on the rear.

Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro display

  • Mate 30: Full HD+
  • Mate 30 Pro: Quad HD+, Under-display fingerprint sensor
  • 90Hz refresh rate for Mate 30 Pro

If Huawei follows the same pattern as last year, the Mate 30 will have a Full HD+ display, while the Mate 30 Pro will see a Quad HD+ display. In 2018, the Pro model was smaller than the standard model, though there has been reports that the Mate 30 Pro will offer a 6.7-inch display, which would be 0.4-inches larger than its predecessor and 0.1-inches larger than the Mate 20. It's not yet clear if the Mate 30 could also increase its size.

The Pro model ditched the physical fingerprint sensor in 2018, switching to an under-display fingerprint reader, while the standard model had a circular fingerprint sensor under the camera housing on the rear. With both Huawei P30 and P30 Pro featuring under-display sensors, we'd expect the same on the Mate series.

There's also been talk of a 90Hz refresh rate for the Mate 30 Pro, like the OnePlus 7 Pro offers and there has also been the claim of a waterfall display for the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, which we've seen in image leaks too.

Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro hardware

  • Kirin 990
  • 4000mAh plus batteries
  • Software could be HarmonyOS

The Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro are both expected to run on the same chipset - the Kirin 990 processor - that was announced at consumer electronics show IFA.

The Mate 30 will likely offer a drop in RAM compared to the Pro model, which is said to be coming with 8GB and 512GB of storage, but both should feature Huawei's version of the microSD - called NM - for storage expansion. It's claimed the Mate 30 will have a 4200mAh battery, while the Mate 30 Pro is said to be coming with a 4500mAh battery.

It's claimed not currently clear what software the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro will run on. Huawei may be forced to launch the Mate 30 series without Google apps and services, meaning they could run on an open source of Android with EMUI 10 over the top but without apps like Gmail or Google Maps or the Play Store, or they might launch on Huawei's recently announced HarmonyOS

Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro camera

  • Mate 30: Triple rear Leica camera
  • Mate 30 Pro: Quad rear Leica camera, 5x optical, 50x digital zoom

Leica camera hardware is expected on both the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro, but the Pro model is likely to see camera enhancements over the standard model. Five times optical zoom has been reported for the Mate 30 Pro, along with 50x digital zoom.

It's also reported the Mate 30 Pro will have a quad rear camera consisting of an ultra-wide lens, regular lens, telephoto lens and a 3D ToF lens. The standard Mate 30 meanwhile, is said to have a triple rear camera.

Huawei revealed its own in-house operating system called HarmonyOS at its Developer Conference in Shenzhen. The OS has previously been called HongMengOS and ArkOS in previous rumours.
